Abu Dhabi is the capital of The United Arab Emirates and it is the largest Emirate, the remainder (Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Umm al Qaiwain and Ras al-Khaimah) being known collectively as the Northern States. Abu Dhabi is flat and sandy, and within its boundaries is the Buraimi Oasis.
A predominantly modern city, Abu Dhabi nevertheless retains some of its ancient past, with several beautiful mosques and the Diwan Amiri (White Fort) dating back to 1793.
Wander the streets to discover local history, Islamic art both ancient and modern, and the ageless life of wharf and souk.
If you're prepared to look below the surface of the modern Abu Dhabi, you'll find traces of the pearling village it was such a short time ago.
The best time of the year to visit Abu Dhabi is between November and April, when the weather is at its best but it can be very windy in Abu Dhabi. The rest of the year is generally very hot and humid. Lightweight summer clothing is suitable for most of the year, but jerseys or jackets may be needed for the winter months, especially in the evenings. Good quality sunglasses are advised, as well as hats, or some protection for the head, are advisable when in direct sunlight.
The Abu Dhabi cuisine contains mainly delicious, flavoursome Middle Eastern foods. Ayran (a refreshing yoghurt drink) or strong black coffee is served on many occasions. It is illegal to drink alcohol in the street or to buy it for a UAE citizen and therefore it is only sold in restaurants and bars attached to 3-star hotels or better and prices are pretty outrageous.
Ramadan, the muslim month of fasting, is strictly adhered to in the UAE; that means no eating, drinking or smoking in public from sunrise to sunset. Places that normally serve alcohol stop serving it during this month. Dates vary from year to year for the religious holidays.
Shopping in Abu Dhabi is very good as customs duties are low and therefore luxury goods are cheaper than in most countries.
Abu Dhabi is the best place to visit if you are after a wonderful mix between the old and new.
