Awe-inspiring mountains, icefields, wind-rippled prairies and a coastline gashed with fjords – Canada’s western-most provinces of British Columbia and Alberta have some of the world’s most spectacular wilderness. British Columbia melds this scenic splendour with the sophistication of Vancouver and the old-world charm of its province capital Victoria.

Several magnificent rail and road journeys begin on this western seaboard. The Sea to Sky Highway leads to Whistler through majestic alpine scenery, with the Whistler Mountaineer train taking a similar path. Another great train to catch is the Rocky Mountaineer that passes canyons and lakes on its way to neighbouring Alberta. Set sail on the Pacific Ocean through the famed Inside Passage or cruise the Discovery Coast. Not only is the landscape magnificent but the land and sea abounds with wildlife, including orca, whales, sea lions, bears and elk.

Sublime alpine Lake Louise and mountain resorts, including Banff and Jasper, entice travellers inland to Alberta. Calgary and its famous stampede and Edmonton, Canada’s festival city, which boasts the world’s largest shopping and entertainment complex, add to its allure. Then there’s Drumheller’s amazing collection of dinosaur skeletons.

Both provinces are home to many First Nations – Canada’s original inhabitants. Discover their ancient culture by sleeping in a tipi or watching traditional dances. Kayak along routes used by centuries of fur trappers or paddle across tranquil fjords in the company of otters and porpoises.
