How could one of the world’s most awe-inspiring coastal drives be made even more fascinating? The Great Ocean Roadns know how - they’ve combined the spectacular 300km Great Ocean Road with a route that explores the Grampian Mountains and the atmospheric goldmining town of Ballarat. Beginning in Melbourne this 777km scenic journey passes famous surfing spots such as Bells Beach on the way to laidback Apollo Bay. Venture on to the world’s highest and longest steel forest canopy walk in the Otway Ranges. The iconic wave-battered Twelve Apostles lie beyond here along the aptly named Shipwreck Coast. During winter months whales can often be seen from the beaches near Warrnambool. Beyond historic Port Fairy the touring route turns north into the Grampians with its rock escarpments, waterfalls and Aboriginal rock art before heading for historic Ballarat and Sovereign Hill’s living museum.
Great Ocean Road Highlights Have an ‘out of Africa’ experience at Werribee Open Range Zoo, 30 minutes from Melbourne. Go on Safari through wild, grassy plains and sweeping river terraces to find rhino, giraffe, antelope, zebra and hippos. Savour the views over Apollo Bay and coastline while dining on fresh seafood and Greek-influenced cuisine at ‘Chris’s Beacon Point Restaurant’. Chris Talihmanidis has been a culinary legend in this area since 1979 and this restaurant has become a mecca for gourmet travellers. Venturing along the Otway Fly Tree Top Walk is a must if you dare! A 600 metre long, 25 metre high elevated tree top walk ascends through the magnificent rainforest featuring Myrtle Beech, Blackwood and Mountain Ash. Marvel at the spectacular Twelve Apostles. Created by the stormy Southern Ocean and blasting winds over 10 million years which have gradually eroded the limestone cliffs and formed arches up to 45 metres high. Sunrise and sunset offer impressive views or enjoy the panoramic view from a helicopter. Dunkeld’s award-winning Royal Mail Hotel Restaurant, offering more than 150 varieties of organic and heirloom vegetables, leaves and herbs. Orchards and an olive grove surround the hotel all of which offer a unique, nature-based cuisine focusing on modern culinary techniques. Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village is built around a state heritage Lighthouse precinct on 10 acres, reflecting the rich atmosphere of a 1870’s coastal port. More than 80 ships came to grief along this coastline with much of this tragic history being documented, recounted and recreated at Flagstaff Hill. Be enthralled by ‘Shipwrecked’, a sound and laser light show. Your journey along the Great Ocean Road must include a visit to Port Fairy, this quaint historic fishing village is a must see! Take a detour to Daylesford and spoil yourself with luxurious spa treatments or a soak in the mineral pools.
