It might be one of Australia's smallest states but Victoria, on the continents south-eastern tip, is a richly diverse region with its mounttains, outback, historic mining towns, a spectacular coastline and of course, Melbourne. This elegant city is a cultural powerhouse but is also famed for its superb shopping and dinging along with its multicultural residents' passion for sport.

Victoria's galleries house some of Australia's most important art collections, its museums are world class and there always seems to be at least one blockbuster musical on stage in Melbourne. Victoria's action-packed and colourful historical heritage lives on its mining towns of Ballarat and Bendigo and its vast expanses of mountains such as the Grampians and the Dandenong, its forests and pastoral lands are still teeming with wildlife. Stories of cattlemen and bushrangers abound but today these are joined by tales of great wine vintages as Victoria has over 850 vineyards producing award-winning wines.

Bounded to the north by the mighty Murray River and its gum forests, Victoria meets the sea along one of the most spectacular coastlines in the world. Its Great Ocean Road is a magnificent touring route. Off-shore is fascinating diving among 19th century shipwrecks and Victoria's surf beaches are legendary.

While Victoria's European history is relatively short, its Aboriginal people have 60,000 years of local heritage. This state is rich not only in rock art sites but also in contemporary Aboriginal art.
