If you confined your stay in Tropical North to the coast between Cairns and Port Douglas, you’d miss so much that this region has to offer. South of Cairns is Mission Beach, a key departure point for the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef, while inland from Cairns are the Cairns Highlands or tropical Tablelands, a mix of cattle country and
national parks, limestone caves and lava tubes.

North of Cairns is the Daintree River, home to a wealth of wildlife including countless bird species, frogs, lush swamp forest and grumpy old saltwater crocs. It’s also the gateway to the other World Heritage site of this region: the spectacular Daintree rainforest, with a biodiversity that’s unparalleled in Australia.

From the river it is a short scenic drive to Cape Tribulation: James Cook was having a bad day when he passed this way, but the journey is considered to be one of the most scenic in the world.

Mission Beach: Two hour’s drive south of Cairns you will reach Mission Beach, a delightful 14 kilometre stretch of golden sand coastline with a stunning rainforest backdrop. Largely un-spoilt it makes a perfect escape but don’t be deceived as there is plenty of adventure to be had here too.

Atherton: Inland from Cairns and worth more than a day trip is the Cairns Highlands or Atherton Tablelands. Due to its volcanic soils this region has always been rich in farm and produce, but today it is home to a thriving coffee industry. There is an abundance of natural beauty, a must see is the curtain fig tree, waterfall circuit and Lake Barrine.

Daintree: The Daintree Cape Tribulation coast is the only place in the world where two World Heritage Listed areas meet – the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest. There is plenty to see with lots of wildlife, river cruises and eco nature galore.Cape Tribulation bay

Cape Tribulation: Once you cross the Daintree River by cable barge you are in the region that is home to the oldest rainforest on the planet. Half way between Cairns and Cooktown, this is a great base for exploring nature in more depth.

Cooktown & Cape York: This is 4WD country - Cooktown is drenched in Aboriginal culture, wildlife and awesome scenery, a great place to take in the raw beauty of the surrounding area. Cape York is at the northernmost tip of Australia, the fishing is a must here!
