Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world: 123 kilometres in length with striking sand cliffs, over 100 freshwater lakes, crystalclear flowing streams, dramatic shipwrecks, a thriving wild dingo population and the only subtropical rainforest where trees grow directly in the sand. It’s just one of the highlights of the Fraser Coast, just three and a half hours north of Brisbane. Another hot spot is Hervey Bay, considered Australia’s whale watching capital due to the annual visit made by humpback whales on their way from northern Queensland to Antarctica between July and November. If boating doesn’t appeal, take to the air in a plane, helicopter or microlite for a different perspective. Fishing, sailing and glass-bottomed boat trips; museums and art galleries; sheltered beaches and a mild climate – no wonder the region’s catchphrase is “Perfect by Nature”.
