Byron Bay is renowned for its beautiful golden beaches, surf culture (no less than 7 surf schools) and laid-back lifestyle that’s just a little bit hippy. Luxury resorts and fine restaurants sit alongside yoga schools and market stalls offering treats like locally-grown organic coffee.

Just an hour or so south of Gold Coast Airport, this colourful, eclectic spot is easily accessible from pretty much anywhere in New Zealand. It’s a good idea to hire a car because as well as that spectacular coastline, you’ll want to head into the hinterland where you will find more stunning natural scenery including National Parks like Mt Warning and Mooball – home to such exotic-sounding species as the long-nosed potoroo and marbled frogmouth.

As Australia’s most easterly region, Byron is the closest point to New Zealand – just one more reason why we should claim it for ourselves.
