Drive south from Gold Coast Airport and you’ll quickly reach the Tweed River and enter a region that’s every bit as beautiful as its better-known northerly neighbour.

Set in the remnants of a huge ancient volcano, the Tweed region offers everything from World Heritage-listed National Parks like Mt Warning to the unspoilt beaches of Kingscliff and Cabarita. If you prefer a resort-style holiday, purpose-built Salt has everything you could wish for. If you’re a foodie, you’ll be in heaven sampling local delights like macadamias, pecans or freshly-caught fish and mud crabs.

Explore inland by houseboat along the Tweed River itself, or hire a car and spend a few days exploring historic villages like the intriguingly named Stokers Siding and Mooball. With all this on offer, what’s most surprising is that the region remains one of Australia’s best kept secrets... but for how long?
