The sun is rising as you free-wheel your bike down an easy slope towards the slow-moving river. Cockatoos and kookaburras greet the day which, despite being mid-winter, looks likely to hit the earlytwenties again. Bright tropical flowers & impossibly green lawns line the route to your new favourite café.

Alas, a long weekend is not long enough to enjoy all the delights that Brisbane has to offer. After browsing the Fortitude Valley markets you’ll barely have time to change into something sensational before you hit the thriving nightlife of the South Bank, and, sadly, tomorrow is your last day.

At least the airport is only 20 minutes from the city centre so you’ll be able to stretch your stay to the last possible minute. You’re already planning your next visit so you can venture a little further afield, including a pilgrimage to stunning Moreton Island, just an hour’s boat ride away.

Riverwalk - 181 tonnes of steel making up 287 floating pontoons: just one section of the 20 kilometres of riverside paths along which you can see Brisbane from a different angle.

At the foot of Mt Coot-Tha you’ll find stunning Botanical Gardens complete with lakes, rainforest and teahouse, but make sure you also head to the summit lookout for great views across the city.

Find out just how cuddly a koala really is at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Australia’s first koala sanctuary. It was established in 1927 and now offers, as well as the obligatory koala cuddle, the chance to handfeed a kangaroo and meet a platypus.

If you’re looking for a dinkum Outback experience without leaving
the city, head for the Australian Woolshed. You’ll see shearing, spinning and working sheepdog demonstrations, all just 14 kilometres from downtown Brisbane.
