Across the river is the new commercial Pudong District, with its many modern buildings.
Nanjing Road is host to the pedestrian shopping mall where you can find all the big department stores, it runs from the Peoples Park and nearly as far as the Bund. At nighttime it lights up in all its neon glory.
The Yuyuan Gardens are an ancient old gem in the heart of the city dating back to the Ming Dynasty. When walking through the gardens it is very peaceful and tranquil, and it is hard to believe there is a bustling city outside the walls.
A visit to the Shanghai Museum is a must, hosting all the treasures of Dynasties gone by. There is an array of rooms that have different spectacles to see, like the bronze, calligraphy and ancient furniture rooms.
