Penang Travel Guide

Penang is the oldest British settlement in Malaysia and often referred to as the ‘Pearl of the Orient’.

An island of contrasts, Penang has something for everyone. In the mini metropolis of downtown Georgetown you’ll find big upmarket shopping malls and super trendy bars and restaurants, while at the beach the atmosphere is more relaxed with fantastic resorts and tropical gardens stretching along its length.

Full of history Penang was once a pirates’ hideout before it came under the British control in 1786. Born as a crossroads for traders from the Middle East, Europe, India, China and nearby islanders, Penang is today a mini Asia in a nutshell! The island still retains its natural charm with quiet sun kissed beaches and tranquil fishing villages. Make time to visit the Snake Temple and some of the local jewellery factories to see local craftsmen in action.

Nightlife - Penang Style! Penang’s like to think of itself as the culinary capitol of Malaysia and with the fantastic food on offer you’re sure to agree. Grab a bite at a local eatery and visit the classic colonial Eastern & Oriental Hotel built in 1885. Outside, catch a trishaw to take you on a slow ride through the colourful streets of historic Georgetown heading for Chew Jetty. Get your camera ready for some beautiful shots as the ferry leaves the terminal, and on a clear day the Penang Bridge, before returning to Batu Ferringhi.

Every night along the main beach road at Batu Ferringhi the night market sets up with its’ treasure trove of goodies and fantastic little local food stalls and restaurants.
