Most people come to Beijing to marvel at its famous landmarks and Imperial past.
The highlights include the Great Wall of China, the infamous Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, The Summer Palace and the architectural wonder of the Temple of Heaven. All filled with fabulous relics, traditional culture and centuries of checkered Chinese history.
But if you have more time, Beijing is hiding many lesser known beauties. The antique district of Luilichang, home to the oldest standing Chinese shops or the weird and wonderful Beijing Opera. Nothing like its western counterpart; the painted faces, fabulous costumes and nimble battle scenes make it a definite cultural experience!
Beijing’s biggest downfall is the pollution, but if you can look past that, you’ll see a beautiful city filled with an ambience of bygone imperial days, developing communist ethos and a new sense of community and culture. China at its best!
