They call it “Land of the Gods” – a tropical island that’s slightly smaller than Taranaki in area, fringed with white-sand beaches and world-famous surf breaks, and with an interior of volcanoes, rainforests and terraced rice paddies, Bali has an amazing ability to offer something for everyone.
Initially discovered by surfers for its amazing beaches, Bali is now well recognised for not only its great surf and stunning beaches, but also its diving and array of other water sports, resorts, restaurants and nightlife.
There are many different villages in Bali, each with their own individual charm and allure that collectively make up Bali. Each region is so unique that it makes it impossible to describe Bali simply.
The people are laid back and welcoming and the cuisine is a foodie’s dream: think lemongrass, coriander, tamarind and ginger. Shopping in Bali is an adventure in itself – it’s cheap and you can buy pretty much anything. Try a little bargaining, but keep it light-hearted and you’ll enjoy it all the more.
After all, what equates to a cup of coffee back home for a Kiwi represents a significant amount of money to the average Balinese. Visit a temple, treat yourself to a massage or discover the interior by bicycle or raft. You’ll find that by venturing beyond the beaches and shopping the real beauty of Bali will reveal itself.
| Hot Tips
• The warmest and driest time to travel to Bali is May to October where temperatures range from 24-30 degrees. • Avoid travelling over Nyepi Day, Bali’s day of Silence. The whole country grinds to a halt and you are not allowed to leave your hotel or make noise. • One of our favourite ways to see the ‘real Bali’ is the Mountain Cycling Tour. • Experience the Balinese culture with a tour out to Uluwatu Temple and then finish with an evening meal along Jimbaran Bay where you will have the freshest seafood. • Give surfing a go. • Visit the Reptile Park to see the amazing Komodo Dragon. |
