Flights to South Africa
Known as the “Rainbow Nation” because of its diverse population (and 11 official languages) South Africa’s colourful name could also refer to the array of spectacular landscapes and wealth of wildlife. South Africa is an artist’s palette - from the blaze of colours among flower-filled meadows, to the lush rainforest greens, the tawny-gold grasslands and the every-changing pallet of ocean blues.

Such a variety of landscapes provides homes with an extraordinary variety of animal-life. There’s the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) but South Africa has made it the Big Seven by adding sharks (including the great white) and whales. They could also have added penguins, turtles and meerkats.

South Africa is all about people too – the Zulu nation welcome visitors to watch pulsating dance and singing and to admire the creation of intricate beadwork and other traditional crafts. The Xhosa too open their lands to travellers. Cape Town, with its spectacular Table Mountain is an iconic destination as are its nearby wineries. Johannesburg, the City of Gold is a melting pot of cultures.

Throughout the country you’ll find sites dating back to some of the earliest human habitation on Earth through to reminders of great battles including the Boer War. Whether you opt for an ultra-luxury lodge or prefer to rough it, self-drive or take a tour, South Africans everywhere will be happy to see you. If you’re lucky you may get to try one of their legendary braais – or barbecues. Don’t miss their famed boerwors sausages!

South Africa Hot Spots

Johannesburg
Jo’burg, or ‘the city of gold’, is the largest city in South Africa. It is fast-growing and often ugly, but it has wealth, energy and a beautiful climate. It’s combination of white middle-class suburbs are offset by the townships such as Soweto, an enormous, sprawling spread of bungalows, houses, huts, shacks and dorms.

If you do wish to visit a township, there are some good organised tours available. You can walk around certain areas of Jo’burg, just use your common sense and don’t advertise wealth or tourist status. Sandton City is one of the more popular areas to stay in, or if you want to stay near the airport there are some great hotel complexes which have restaurants, shops and even casinos without having to go anywhere!

Worthwhile attractions include Gold Reef City, Sandton City, Village Walk, Eastgate or Rosebank Mall and the Apartheid Museum.
Sun City
Sun City is the perfect place to escape to and relax for a few days. The complex has four large hotels ranging in standard and quality from a family friendly affordable resort to the five star deluxe Palace of the Lost City. The entertainment here is fantastic, there’s a casino, movie theatres, a food hall, shops, Water Park, Animal Park, and two international golf courses.

If that doesn’t keep you entertained you can take a hot air balloon over the area or head out on safari to the nearby Pilansburg National Park. Sun City is just a 2 hour drive from Johannesburg, so you can either rent a car to get there or take scheduled transfers.
Kruger National Park
As well as being one of the most famous wildlife parks in the world, Kruger National Park is among the biggest and the oldest, founded in 1898 by former President Paul Kruger. You can see the ‘big five’ here (lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and rhinos) as well as cheetahs, giraffes, hippos, all sorts of antelope species and smaller animals.

The park runs for 350km along the Mozambique border and has an average width of 60km. The main entry points to the park are through the towns of Skukuza and Nelspruit, both about 5 hours drive from Johannesburg. We recommend staying in a private reserve, this means you don’t have to stay on the road when looking for wildlife like you do in Kruger National Park ‘s public area. You are more free to go off road and explore.
Cape Town
Cape Town is the most open-minded and relaxed city in South Africa. It spreads out in front of Table Mountain which rises more than 1000m high, and overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. Not to be missed here is the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, a part of the old harbour, which has been converted into a lively tourist attraction with shops, bars, restaurants and luxury hotels.

One of Cape Town’s highlights is taking the cable car up to the top of Table Mountain where there are breathtaking views. Other popular attractions are Robben Island, the former prison where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for over 17 years, Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and the penguin colony at Boulder’s Bay, the Winelands around Stellenbosch and Paarl, Clifton Beach which is great for swimming, and Camps Bay with its Twelve Apostles.
The Garden Route
The Garden Route runs along the southern coastal tip of South Africa. It is an area of dense forests, wide bays, rocky cliffs and gorgeous beaches. There are plenty of great spots along the Garden Route including Paul Sauer Bridge over the Storms River canyon, Tsitsikamma National Park with its 800 year old Yellowwood trees, and Plettenburg Bay, one of South Africa’s most prestigious holiday spots.

A night in Knysna, a cute little seaside town with a holiday atmosphere is a must, there is also Mossel Bay, where the first European explorer came ashore in 1488 and site of the Old Post Office Tree used by 16th century seamen. For animal lovers you can visit Hermanas for seasonal whale watching, Oudtshoorn for their Ostrich farms or even stop off at one of the few private game reserves for a short safari en-route.
Durban
The large city of Durban sits on the East Coast of South Africa. It is a holiday-goers’ paradise with a subtropical climate, great surf beaches and a happening nightlife.

The Golden Mile stretches along the main beaches and has amusement parks, paved walkways, gardens and fountains. The Victoria St Market is the area’s main attraction, but other must sees are the African Art Centre featuring work by rural artists, Juma Mosque, the largest in the southern hemisphere, and the Alayam Hindu Temple, South Africa’s oldest and biggest.
