As Australia’s most humble hippie town, and the closest nugget of the country to NZ, this charming wee neighbour of ours is renowned for its laid back vibe, beautiful blonde beaches and a surf that keeps the boarders perennially happy. Get about it.
Here are our top 10 things to do when you’re next basking in Byron sunshine.
1. Relax and unwind
The Byron at Byron Resort & Spa might sit in the higher end of the hotel market but it’s well worth your Aussie dollar. While it’s defined as a luxury resort with an amazing pool, the main focus of the Byron at Byron is their Wellness Centre, which has plenty of relaxation, rejuvenation and spa treatments available. Oh and free yoga sessions every day too.
2. At one with water
If wave worshipping is more your thing, then head up to Byron Bay and unleash your inner hippie. With everything you’d expect from a surfer town, set amidst elegant beaches and lush green hinterland (plus the added bonus of a potential Chris Hemsworth sighting) it’s a must visit. Set your alarm for an hour or two earlier than usual and catch the sun rise over the horizon. It’s the tranquil experience guaranteed to make you feel like you’ve had that much needed break.
3. Bike riding along Byron Bay coastal region
Head to the beautiful coastline surrounding Byron Bay, stretching from Ballina in New South Wales up to Queensland’s Gold Coast. Soar past vast and pristine beaches, enjoy the chilled coastal culture that brims with musical and artistic talent, and take in stunning seaside sunsets.
4. Tasty morsels at Dish Restaurant
Enjoy a dining experience which captures Byron’s individual style and creativity and offers the freshest in Australian produce. Be sure to try the freshly shucked oysters.
5. Eat well
On a similar note, you can still find plentiful bohemian coffee shops, gluten free bakeries and funky bars blaring Bob Marley in Byron Bay. Pull up a pew and watch the daily surf roll in – while nursing an extra large (organic) latte and a platter of GF goodies.
6. Off the rails at The Rails
Head here for a great night out with the locals, right in the heart of Byron Bay and world famous for its fantastic live music every night of the year. You haven’t experienced Byron until you’ve experienced The Rails.
7. This little hippie went to market….
Treat yourself to a little something made or bought from Byron Bay Markets. The community market happens every first and third Sunday of the month, with arts, crafts, jewellery and skin care on offer, as well as plants and furniture. The farmers’ market is on every Thursday morning, offering fresh organic produce and a huge range of other locally produced goodies.
8. Get away from the crowds rather than joining them
Venture into the hinterland to the Crystal Castle, where you can have your aura read, wander through the magical gardens or mystic statues, and marvel at the exquisite jewellery, books, treasures and huge crystal collection. With inviting pathways and symbolic Buddhist stupors, a walk around this mystical enclave offers a little Tibetan escape in the middle of Australia. Indulge in the local produce and coffee as you relax and take in the lush garden views.
9. Good morning gorgeous
Take an early morning walk to Australian mainland’s most easterly point, and watch the sun rise at Cape Byron Lighthouse. The views are amazing and on a good day you can see the entire coast of Byron Bay. It’s very popular with adrenaline seekers and you’re likely to see plenty of kites and kitesurfers. It’s also the perfect place to look out for dolphins, turtles, wallabies, and between June and November, humpback whales.
10. Hot rod it
In Byron Bay it’s always a good idea to hire a car because as well as that spectacular coastline, you’ll want to head into the hinterland where you will find more stunning natural scenery including National Parks like Mt Warning and Mooball.
Don't forget to take a dip in the ocean to cool off at least once!
