Where else in the world can visitors experience both a World Heritage-listed coral reef and rainforest? Port Douglas, approximately 70 km north of Cairns, offers a gateway to Daintree National Park, Cape Tribulation and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as the stunning Four Mile Beach. The Great Barrier Reef almost needs no introduction. It is the world’s largest coral reef, stretching over 2000 km, is home to thousands of tropical fish species, hundreds of coral types, sea turtles and birds. It is a divers and snorkeller’s paradise; however, there are hundreds of ways to experience this wonderful natural phenomenon without even getting in the water, such as a cruise on a semi-sub or underwater observatory, private fishing charter or a flight over the reef in a seaplane or helicopter.

Meanwhile, Daintree National Park is home to the ancient Daintree Rainforest and over 430 bird species. In the southern end of the park can be found Mossman Gorge, replete with unspoiled rainforest, meandering streams and of course the dramatic gorge itself. At the Mossman Gorge Centre, visitors can gain an insight into the lives, culture and beliefs of the local Kuku Yalanji people and the unique connection they share with their natural environment. Be sure to join Jungle Surfing Canopy tour at Cape Tribulation, giving spectacular views to visitors sitting in comfortable full body harnesses.

If you’re getting overwhelmed by all the beautiful attractions that surround Port Douglas, then take some time to unwind and explore the renowned Port Douglas Markets. These take place every Sunday at Anzac Park. Amongst the bustle you’ll find stalls selling homemade goods guaranteed to either be made by the stallholders or their families. Alternatively, chill out at the beautiful Four Mile Beach, where you can relax, go on walks or even learn to kitesurf.
