Great Treasure of Guatemala

story by: House of Travel Specialist

It is hard to describe Guatemala in so little space, let alone convince a reader that a third world country, tainted with a history of violence and crime, is far more beautiful than that of an advanced nation! But this is how I felt when I reluctantly pried away from the Mayan land, simply because of how far they’ve come and what they’ve managed to preserve of their traditions.

Start with a few nights overlooking the picturesque cobblestone streets of Antigua City and even take a walk on a ‘reasonably’ active volcano if you wish. Lake Atitlan is known as the most beautiful lake in the world, well worth stopping here for a couple of nights to inhale the mystical scenery.

Just over the hill are the biggest markets in Central America, Chichicastenango. Immerse yourself in bargaining, the local cooking smells, crafts, local art, song and dance. Heading north you’ll enter the Peten Jungle, the home of Tikal amongst many other Mayan ruins, let the ancient truth unfold before your eyes!

Throughout Guatemala, you’ll be warmly welcomed by the indigenous people. Give them your respect and they will let you into their hearts & lives, where’ll you learn more about life than in years of school. Accommodation can be stunning, boutique and timeless at just a fraction of the price paid elsewhere.

It is evident in the everyday life of a Guatemalan, that, yes they struggle economically in comparison to the western world, their political issues still have years of mending.. But they live each day with colour, boldness, simplicity, and are contently happy with what they have, instead of the worry or stress of the 1st world wants & desires. Little do the Guatemalan population know, they have some of the world’s most beautiful and powerful scenery that would make any wealthy person respect the way they live their lives. This is a beautiful and totally underrated part of the world.
