Inspire Magazine - Kaua'i Island's Timeless Beauty

story by: Inspire Magazine

Geographically, Kaua'i is the oldest of the four main Hawaiian Islands, so it's had time to develop some spectacular scenery and luxurious foliage. To many this is the most beautiful of the islands, with emerald valleys, cascading waterfalls and spectacular peaks. It's also one of the most serene, a retreat of romantic seclusion with intimate beaches away from the crowds, and a relaxed style where the customs of old Hawai'i are alive and well.

Whilst it's hard to resist being seduced by the romantic allure of Kaua'i it's worth noting that this is an island of adventure as well, after all Captain Jack Sparrow stepped ashore here. Try exploring the lush valleys sandwiched between jagged peaks by horseback. Or if you're up to the challenge tackle the 18km trail to the isolated and rugged Napali Coast. The trail isn't for the faint hearted, but the towering pinnacles rising straight out of the ocean are worth the effort. During the summer months there are regular boat tours to the coast from Port Allen, and once you arrive kayaking is an excellent way to absorb the breath-taking scenery.

Kaua'i is a popular addition to a holiday on O`ahu, but make sure that you allocate enough time to the charms of an island that you've undoubtedly seen before (Jurassic Park, King Kong and Raiders of the Lost Ark were all shot on the island). There is an abundance of natural wonders, such as Waimea Canyon – called the 'Grand Canyon of the Pacific' by Mark Twain and lots to do besides relaxing; try an exhilarating Zipline tour across the lush jungle canopy, or a tubing expedition through the mysterious tunnels of the 'Ditch'.
