Sunshine Coast Sightseeing, Australia

story by: Inspire Queensland

Steve Irwin’s family was onto something when they started their enterprise in 1970. Its incredible growth in popularity since then has been mirrored by that of the Sunshine Coast itself. Of course you don’t have to be into reptiles to have a great time in this region: you can learn to surf, walk the coastline for miles through a National Park and finally enjoy fish and chips or a gourmet meal as the sun goes down. The laidback, outdoor lifestyle is one you’ll adjust to very quickly! Choose from kilometres of fabulous beaches, from Caloundra in the south to Cooloola in the north (which also serves as gateway to Fraser Island). When you tire of beaches, the cooking schools and day spas will compete for your attention, along with championship golf courses and, of course, that world-famous zoo.

Australia Zoo

CRIKEY! It’s as wild as life gets at the home of the Crocodile Hunter, where you’ll experience wildlife like nowhere else in the world. There are over 1200 animals and interactive wildlife shows daily – from tigers to otters, dingoes to koalas and everything in between. Don’t miss the slithering, jaw-snapping action of Australia Zoo’s Wildlife Warrior Show in the world famous Crocoseum.

Fraser Coast

Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world: 123km in length with striking sand cliffs, over 100 freshwater lakes, crystal clear flowing streams, dramatic shipwrecks, a thriving wild dingo population and the only subtropical rainforest where trees grow directly in the sand.

That’s just one of the highlights of the Fraser Coast, just three and a half hours north of Brisbane.

Another hot spot on this coast is Hervey Bay, considered Australia’s whale watching capital due to the annual visit made by humpback whales on their way from Northern Queensland to Antarctica between July and November.

If boating doesn’t appeal, take to the air in a plane, helicopter or microlite for a different perspective. Fishing, sailing and glass-bottomed boat trips, museums and art galleries, sheltered beaches and a mild climate – it’s little wonder that the region’s catchphrase is ‘Perfect by Nature’.
