Tanzania: Mt Kilimanjaro Climb - Machame Route

The Machame Route offers some of the best scenery – ascending the western side of Kilimanjaro and descending down the south face. This is a camping route with porters to assist with camping equipment, meals prepared by cooks, and accompanied by mountain guides.

Day 1: Moshi
Meet at your hotel for climb briefing.

Day 2: Machame
Transfer to base and commence the 5 hour hike to Machame Hut at 3,000m. All camping equipment is carried by porters who set up camp.

Day 3: Shira
The hike starts to the top of the forest, then 2 hours at a more gentle angle. After lunch acend to Shira Hut at 3,800m. Hiking time is approximately 6 hours.

Day 4: Barranco
Climb slowly for about 5km through barren terrain. Traverse across to Barranco Hut. A fairly long, strenuous day. Hiking time is approximately 8 hours.

Day 5: Barafu
A long day traversing hills to Barafu at 4,600m. Hiking time is approximately 9 hours.

Day 6: The Summit
Your final ascent departs midnight. Reach the the edge of the crater and the highest point in Africa, Uhuru peak at 5,895m with spectacular views! Arrive back at Mweka late afternoon. Hiking time is approximately 14 hours.

Day 7: Moshi
Descend to Mweka Village, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Moshi.

Day 8: Moshi
Transfer to the airport where your adventure ends.
