It’s a jumping off point for some of Croatia’s most popular islands including Hvar, Korcula and Brac, but you’d be missing out if you treat this city as just a transit point. This beautiful and vibrant seaside city boasts remnants from an eclectic history that has seen it spend time under Roman, Venetian, French and Yugoslav rule. Split is the unofficial "capital" of the Dalmation region and is the second-largest city in Croatia. Its ancient centre was built around Diocletian’s Palace just over 1700 years ago and you can still see some of the Roman architecture, such as walls and temples. The massive Diocletian's Palace was original built as a retirement home for the Roman emperor Diocletian, but it was also used for military and defensive purposes, with about half of it dedicated to housing the military garrison. Today this remarkably preserved fortress-like palace is one of the most complete Roman monuments in the world. However, the World Heritage-listed Diocletian’s Palace is just one of the draw cards: the ruins of this massive fourth century palace cover over three hectares and you’ll still find homes, restaurants and shops within its walls today. A highlight of any visit to this region is the wonderful fresh seafood – be sure to include a visit to Split’s fish market if you want to try the best in local specialities including everything from sardines to lobsters. Then head to the Riva or waterfront promenade area – great views and the perfect place for people-watching. There are some stunning accommodation options available in Split, from a boutique hotel first opened in 1900 located right within the palace walls to a brand new, ‘modern-chic’ option situated in the heart of the vibrant old city.
