Belgium - Brugge

story by: Inspire Central & Eastern Europe, & Scandinavia

Brugge is the self proclaimed capital of the Flemish region of Belgium. Chocolate box-picturesque, this medieval city is one of the most perfectly preserved and most visited in Western Europe, but the trade-off is that you’ll be sharing its cobbled squares and canalside walkways with a lot of other visitors. The Belfort is one sight you literally can’t miss – it towers 83 metres above the city centre and leans almost a metre to the east at the top. The 366 steps to the top will test your determination and its bells will keep you on schedule. Beat the daytrippers by getting out and about early, then when they’ve all gone home you can again enjoy the quiet beauty of the place on a horse-drawn carriage ride or canal cruise.
