Early morning in San Francisco, you’re emulating the locals and strolling through Golden Gate Park. The promise of California sunshine is there, just behind a soft shroud of fog. The fog lifts, revealing the Golden Gate Bridge stretching away across the Bay, turned even more golden by the early sunshine.

That done, you head for the Italian-American neighbourhood of North Beach for some great coffee and a pastry or two. Last night you dined out in the largest Chinatown outside of Asia, so you’ve covered ethnic diversity pretty well.
After breakfast you’ll ride the iconic cable car to Fisherman’s Wharf, hire a bicycle, cross that bridge you saw this morning and coast downhill into Mediterranean-style Sausalito. The ferry will suffice for the journey home: 8 cruisy miles is ample exercise for one day.

That just leaves time for a little shopping – which means you’ve covered food, coffee, culture, scenery, fresh air and beautiful scenery – not bad for a couple of days’ work.
